English Story: The Honest Woodcutter

Note: This is an original, learner-friendly retelling inspired by a very old folk tale, also known from Aesop's fables. The words in bold are important vocabulary words explained in the tables below.

A Poor but Hardworking Man

Long ago, in a small village near a thick green forest, there lived a poor woodcutter named Ramu. He was a simple and hardworking man. Every morning, he woke up before sunrise. He took his old iron axe on his shoulder and walked to the forest. He cut dry branches and fallen trees, tied the wood into bundles, and sold it in the village market. With the little money he earned, he bought food for his wife and his two small children.

Ramu did not have much, but he was never greedy. He believed that a person should work honestly and be happy with what he has. His axe was very old, and its wooden handle was rough, yet he loved it because it gave his family their daily bread.

A Sad Day by the River

One hot summer day, Ramu was cutting a tall dry tree on the bank of a deep river. He was tired, and sweat was running down his face. As he lifted the axe for the last time, it slipped from his hands and fell into the river with a loud splash. Ramu looked into the water, but the river was so deep that he could not see anything.

"Oh no! My axe!" he cried. "Without it, I cannot cut wood. How will I feed my family?" He sat down on the bank, put his head in his hands and began to cry. He did not know how to swim, so he could not jump in and search for it.

The River Spirit Appears

Suddenly, the water began to shine. A kind river spirit rose slowly from the river. She had a gentle face and a calm voice.

"Why are you crying, good man?" she asked.

Ramu wiped his tears and said, "My axe fell into the river, madam. It was my only tool. I am a poor man, and I have no money to buy a new one."

The spirit smiled. "Do not worry. I will help you," she said, and she went back under the water.

After a few moments, the spirit came back with a shining golden axe. "Is this your axe?" she asked.

Ramu looked at it carefully. It was very beautiful, and it looked very costly. But he shook his head. "No, madam. This is not my axe. Mine is old and made of iron."

The spirit disappeared again and returned with a silver axe. "Is this one yours?" she asked.

Ramu looked at it and said, "No, madam. This is also not mine. My axe is plain and old."

Once more the spirit went down into the water. This time she came back with an old iron axe with a rough wooden handle. Ramu's eyes filled with joy. "Yes! This is my axe," he said. "Thank you, thank you so much!"

The Reward of Honesty

The spirit was very pleased. "You are an honest man, Ramu," she said. "You could have taken the golden axe, and nobody would ever have known. But you told me the truth, even though you were poor and in need. Honesty like yours is rare, so I want to reward you. Take all three axes."

Ramu could not believe his luck. He bowed with respect and thanked the spirit again and again. She smiled and went back into the river.

Ramu returned home and told his family everything. He sold the golden and silver axes and bought a small piece of land, some farm tools and new clothes. He also helped the poor families in his village. But he kept his old iron axe, because it always reminded him that honesty had brought him good luck.

The Greedy Neighbour

News of Ramu's good fortune spread quickly. His neighbour, Shyam, was a lazy man who always wanted to become rich without hard work. When he heard the story, he thought, "If a poor man can get a golden axe, so can I!"

The next morning, Shyam went to the same river with his axe. He did not cut any wood. He simply threw his axe into the water and began to cry loudly, pretending to be sad.

The river spirit appeared again and asked, "Why are you crying?"

"My axe has fallen into the river, madam. Please help me," said Shyam.

The spirit went down and came back with the golden axe. "Is this yours?" she asked.

Shyam's eyes shone with greed. "Yes, yes! This is mine!" he shouted, and he reached out to take it.

The spirit's face turned serious. "You are telling a lie," she said. "I know the truth. You threw your own axe into the river on purpose. You are not honest, so I will not give you the golden axe." She disappeared with the golden axe, and she did not return Shyam's own axe either.

Shyam stood alone on the bank. He had lost his axe, and he had no hope of getting a new one. He walked home with his head down, full of regret. At last he understood that cheating never brings happiness.

The Moral of the Story

Honesty is the best policy. An honest person may face problems for some time, but in the end, truth and good character are rewarded. A dishonest person may get a small and quick gain, but he often loses everything in the end.

Short Hindi Explanation (हिंदी में सरल व्याख्या)

(Moral)

(Honesty is the best policy.)
