Quick calculation shortcuts
- ×11: write the sum of the two digits between them. 53 × 11 = 5 (5+3) 3 = 583.
- ×5: multiply by 10, then halve. 48 × 5 = 480 ÷ 2 = 240.
- ×25: multiply by 100, then divide by 4. 36 × 25 = 3600 ÷ 4 = 900.
- ×9: multiply by 10, then subtract the number. 47 × 9 = 470 − 47 = 423.
- ×99: multiply by 100, then subtract the number. 23 × 99 = 2300 − 23 = 2277.
- Square of a number ending in 5: multiply the first digit(s) by one more, then append 25. 65²: 6 × 7 = 42, so 4225.
- Squares near 50: 53² = 2500 + 3 × 100 + 9 = 2809.
- Squares near 100: 97² = (100 − 3)² = 10000 − 600 + 9 = 9409.
